motd-news (Ubuntu's login news)

What motd-news (Ubuntu's login news) sends out of your computer by default, when, to whom, and the switch that stops it, version by version, with how we know.

The answer

By the base-files source package at 14ubuntu6.2, not wire-checked: on Ubuntu installs that carry motd-news-config (Ubuntu 26.04's server metapackage depends on it, its desktop metapackages do not), a timer fetches Ubuntu's login news from motd.ubuntu.com twice a day, each run delayed at random by up to 12 hours, and once, a minute after boot, with a user agent naming the wget version, the release, the kernel and architecture, the processor model and any cloud ID; ENABLED=0 in /etc/default/motd-news stops it (the timer can be disabled too), after which the login news lines no longer appear.
